PGA Tour's Yearly Greens In Regulation (GIR) Leaders

Below are the annual leaders in GIR (Greens in Regulation) on the PGA Tour. The list goes back to 1980, which is the year the tour started keeping this statistic.

What does hitting a green "in regulation" mean? Subtract two from par (hit the green in 1 on a par-3; with your second stroke on a par-4; with the third stroke on a par-5).

A few notes about the list:

  • Since the Tour began keeping this stat, the highest GIR is 75.15 percent, recorded by Tiger Woods in 2000.

  • And the lowest GIR to lead the PGA Tour is 70.34, which was Justin Rose's leading figure in 2012.

  • Jack Nicklaus was the greens-in-regulation leader in the year this stat became an official PGA Tour statistic (1980).

  • Calvin Peete, who once led the tour in driving accuracy 10 consecutive years, led the tour in GIR three straight years, 1981-83.

  • The golfer who has "won" the greens in regulation statistic most often since 1980 is Tiger Woods, who led four times (2000, 2002, 2006, 2007).
