1999 US Open

The 1999 U.S. Open was the 99th edition of the tournament, won by Payne Stewart months before his death.

Winner: Payne Stewart, 279

Where it was played: Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina

Tournament dates: June 17-20, 1999

Leader after first round: Phil Mickelson, Paul Goydos, Billy Mayfair and David Duval, 67

Leader after second round: David Duval, Phil Mickelson and Payne Stewart, 137

Leader after third round: Payne Stewart, 209

Notable Notes: Payne Stewart sank a 15-foot par putt on the final hole of the tournament to beat Phil Mickelson by one stroke. Stewart then thrust his fist into the air and kicked out one leg behind him, a famous celebratory pose now memorialized in a statue at Pinehurst. It was Stewart's second U.S. Open title, his third major overall - and his final. He was killed in a plane crash five months later. It was Mickelson's first runner-up finish in a U.S. Open; he eventually set the tournament record for most seconds.
