1990 US Open

The 1990 U.S. Open was the 90th time the tournament was played, and it was settled in an 18-hole playoff that continued into sudden-death holes.

Winner: Hale Irwin, 280

Where it was played: Medinah Country Club (No. 3 Course) in Medinah, Illinois

Tournament dates: June 14-18, 1990

Leader after first round: Jeff Sluman, Scott Simpson and Tim Simpson, 66

Leader after second round: Tim Simpson, 135

Leader after third round: Mike Donald and Billy Ray Brown, 209

Notable Notes: 45-year-old Hale Irwin outlasted Mike Donald in a playoff to win his third U.S. Open championship. In so doing, he became the tournament's oldest winner. Irwin was four strokes behind the third-round co-leaders, Donald and Billy Ray Brown, as the final round started. But Irwin shot 67 to Donald's 71 to catch him (Brown shot 72 and finished tied for third). In the playoff, Irwin and Donald finished 18 holes still tied, both shooting 74. But on the first sudden-death hole, Irwin won with a birdie.
