1940 US Open

The 1940 U.S. Open was the 44th time the tournament was played, and it ended with an 18-hole playoff.

Winner: Lawson Little, 287

Where it was played: Canterbury Golf Club in Beachwood, Ohio

Tournament dates: June 6-9, 1940

Leader after first round: Sam Snead, 67

Leader after second round: Lawson Little, Horton Smith and Sam Snead, 141

Leader after third round: Frank Walsh, 213

Notable Notes: Lawson Little, who had won four amateur majors, won his only professional major here, beating 38-year-old Gene Sarazen in an 18-hole playoff. When third-round leader Frank Walsh stumbled with a 79 in the fourth round, Little and Sarazen took advantage and tied at 287. Sarazen bogied the first playoff hole and was never level with Lawson after that. Lawson won by three, 70 to 73.
