1980 PGA Championship

The 1980 PGA Championship was the 62nd time the tournament was played, and the fifth time it was won by the Bear.

Winner: Jack Nicklaus, 274

Where it was played: Oak Hill Country Club (East Course) in Rochester, New York

Tournament dates: August 7-10, 1980

Leader after first round: Craig Stadler, 67

Leader after second round: Gil Morgan, 138

Leader after third round: Jack Nicklaus, 205

Notable Notes: Jack Nicklaus hovered around the lead the first two rounds, then took the lead with a 66 in the third round. And ran away with the lead in the final round to win by seven strokes, at the time the PGA Championship record for largest margin of victory.

Nicklaus was considered in decline by golf media at the start of 1980, then he won two majors: first the U.S. Open, then this one. In winning the PGA, he tied Walter Hagen's record of five PGA Championship trophies. It was Nicklaus' 17th win in a major, his second-to-last.
