2004 Masters

For years Phil Mickelson was tagged as the "best player without a major." But at the 2004 Masters, the 68th played, Mickelson won to shed that label.

Winner: Phil Mickelson, 279

Where it was played: Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, Georgia

Tournament dates: April 8-11, 2004

Leader after first round: Justin Rose, 67

Leader after second round: Justin Rose, 138

Leader after third round: Chris DiMarco and Phil Mickelson, 210

Notable Notes: Phil Mickelson won 22 times on the PGA Tour without a winning a major. Then, his 23rd victory was here at The Masters.

Mickelson and Ernie Els battled over much of the back nine during the final round, Els shooting 67 to Mickelson's 69. Mickleson made five birdies over the final nine holes, including one to tie Els for the lead at No. 16. Then, at the last hole, Mickelson rolled in an 18-foot birdie putt to win the tournament.
