1983 Masters Winner and Scores

The 47th edition of The Masters tournament was won by Seve Ballesteros with an early surge in the final round — he played the first four holes in 4-under-par. And after the third-round co-leaders stumbled, Seve won by four strokes.

What Happened in the 1983 Masters Tournament

Seve Ballesteros won his second Masters championship, but he had to wait until Monday to do it. Rain cancelled play during Friday's second round, pushing the tournament's finish back a day until Monday.

The wait was well worth it for Ballesteros, who finished four strokes in front of a stellar cast of chasers — Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite, Raymond Floyd and Tom Watson and Hale Irwin. But Ballesteros took most of the drama out of the day early, starting his final round 4-under over the first four holes.

Ballesteros began the final round one off the lead shared by defending champ Craig Stadler and Floyd. But in his first four holes of Round 4, Ballesteros had birdies on Nos. 1 and 4 and an eagle on the second, surging into into the lead. He shot 31 on the front nine and finished with a 69. Stadler had a 76, Floyd a 75 and Watson a 73. Kite and Crenshaw were both sub-70, but started too far back to make a move on Ballesteros.

The 1983 Masters is also notable as the final Masters in which Arnold Palmer made the cut. Palmer, age 53, opened with a 68, just a stroke off the lead. He faded over the following three rounds, but this goes down as the last time he played the weekend in a Masters.

This was also the last major championship played by Sam Snead, who, at age 70, withdrew after an opening 79 — although Snead continued for many years as an honorary starter in The Masters. (Jack Nicklaus also withrew before the second round with back spasms.)

The 1983 Masters was the first one in which golfers were allowed to use their own caddies, rather than caddies provided by Augusta National. Twelve still chose to use Augusta National caddies. One golfer, George Archer, winner of the 1969 Masters, had his daughter caddie for him. That made 19-year-old Elizabeth Archer the first woman to caddie in The Masters.
